About the Department

The Biomedical Engineering Department at Nyeri County Referral Hospital (NCRH) plays a crucial role in supporting the hospital’s clinical services through the maintenance, calibration, repair, and safe operation of medical equipment. The department bridges the gap between medicine and technology by ensuring that all diagnostic, therapeutic, and life-support systems meet regulatory, safety, and performance standards. Through collaboration with clinical departments, procurement teams, and training institutions, Biomedical Engineering contributes to improved patient outcomes and efficient service delivery.

Core Functions & Services

  • Preventive Maintenance – Routine inspection and servicing of equipment to ensure reliability and extend lifespan

  • Corrective Maintenance – Troubleshooting and repair of malfunctioning or broken equipment

  • Calibration & Quality Assurance – Ensuring devices meet manufacturer and international performance standards

  • Installation & Commissioning – Supervising setup of new equipment and confirming readiness for clinical use

  • Asset Management – Inventory control, tagging, tracking, and lifecycle documentation of all hospital medical devices

  • Technical Evaluation & Procurement Support – Offering technical advice during acquisition of new medical equipment and ensuring quality control during delivery

  • User Training – Providing frontline staff with basic usage, handling, and safety instructions for new or critical equipment

  • Equipment Safety Audits – Periodic review of medical device safety and compliance with Kenya Medical Devices Regulatory Authority (KEMSA/KMDB) standards

  • Diagnostic Equipment – X-ray machines, ultrasound units, ECGs, CT scanners

  • Therapeutic Equipment – Infusion pumps, defibrillators, oxygen concentrators

  • Surgical Equipment – Theatre lights, anesthesia machines, electrosurgical units

  • ICU/Monitoring Devices – Ventilators, patient monitors, suction units

Internal Collaboration

  • Works closely with departments such as Radiology, Laboratory, Theatre, Maternity, and Critical Care for equipment uptime.

  • Supports the Procurement & Supply Chain team by conducting pre-inspection and post-delivery evaluations.

  • Collaborates with ICT for integrated medical technologies and shared equipment platforms.

Safety & Compliance

  • Compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines and ISO standards

  • Enforces electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and sterilization protocols

  • Maintains records for equipment warranties, service logs, and calibration certificates

  • Supports emergency preparedness by ensuring availability of critical care devices during mass casualty or power outage situations
