About the Department

The Surgical Department at Nyeri County Referral Hospital (NCRH) is a critical pillar of the hospital’s clinical services, providing both elective and emergency surgical interventions to patients across the region. With a skilled multidisciplinary team and well-equipped theatres, the department handles a wide range of surgical cases including general surgery, urology, gastrointestinal, breast, thyroid, and soft tissue surgeries. Through a patient-centered approach, adherence to clinical protocols, and continuous staff development, the department ensures timely and high-quality surgical care aligned with national and international standards.

  • Consultant General Surgeon (Head of Department)

  • Senior Medical Officers – 2

  • Clinical Officers – 3 (Surgical Specialty)

  • Theatre Nurses – Assigned from Perioperative Department

  • Surgical Ward Nurses – Day & Night Shift

  • Medical Students & Interns – Under supervision during rounds and procedures

  • Support Staff – Ward attendants, record clerks, and sanitary personnel

Core Surgical Services

  • Outpatient Surgical Clinics – Evaluation of surgical conditions, follow-up of operated patients, minor procedures

  • Elective Surgeries – Herniorrhaphy, mastectomy, thyroidectomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hydrocelectomy, etc.

  • Emergency Surgeries – Exploratory laparotomy, intestinal obstruction, ruptured appendix, trauma surgery

  • Urological Procedures – Circumcision, prostatectomy, urethral dilatation, cystostomy

  • Soft Tissue Procedures – Abscess drainage, wound debridement, lipoma removal

  • Biopsy Services – Lymph node, breast, thyroid and abdominal mass biopsies for histopathology

  • Colostomy Formation & Reversal – For bowel diversion in cases of obstruction or injury

  • Wound Care & Postoperative Management – Dressing changes, physiotherapy referrals, infection control

  • Fully equipped main operating theatres – 3

  • Sterile Processing Department (CSSD) – For equipment sterilization

  • Surgical Outpatient Clinic Rooms – For minor procedures and reviews

  • Dedicated Male & Female Surgical Wards – With post-operative monitoring capability

  • Ultrasound, X-ray, and CT Scan support – For preoperative and intraoperative imaging

Patient Workflow & Clinic Days

  • Monday to Friday – Surgical OPD clinics (Room 10)

  • Patients with elective surgical needs are assessed and scheduled

  • Emergency cases admitted via Casualty Department and prioritized for theatre

  • Postoperative patients reviewed during ward rounds or scheduled follow-ups

Training & Research

  • Supervision of medical officer interns, clinical officer interns, and medical students during rotations

  • Participation in clinical audits, mortality and morbidity meetings

  • Collaboration with surgical societies for skills development and surgical research

Patient Safety & Quality Standards

  • WHO Surgical Safety Checklist implementation

  • Pre-anesthesia and postoperative care protocols

  • Strict infection prevention and control (IPC) adherence

  • Blood transfusion safety protocols in collaboration with the Blood Bank

  • Multidisciplinary perioperative approach with anesthesia, nursing, and critical care

Referral Pathways

  • Referral from OPD, Casualty, or County Clinics

  • Linkages to Kenyatta National Hospital or teaching hospitals for complex or oncologic surgeries

  • Coordination with Oncology, Radiology, and Laboratory departments for multidisciplinary cases
