About the Department

The Paediatric Outpatient Department (POPD) at Nyeri County Referral Hospital is the first point of contact for children requiring ambulatory care. Staffed by paediatricians, medical officers, nurses, nutritionists, and child‑life specialists, the unit offers preventive, curative, and developmental services in a welcoming, family‑friendly environment. Our goal is early detection, prompt management, and continuous monitoring of childhood illnesses to promote healthy growth and development.

Patient Workflow & Processes

  • Registration & Triage – Verification of child health card, vitals, weight, height, and MUAC recorded at triage desk

  • Consultation – Detailed history, physical examination, provisional diagnosis, and treatment plan

  • Investigations – Point‑of‑care tests (malaria RDT, HIV PCR for EID), routine labs, radiology as ordered

  • Treatment & Dispensing – On‑site pharmacy dispenses paediatric‑dose medications; nurse administers immunisations or nebulisations

  • Counselling & Education – Caregiver receives instructions on medication, danger signs, nutrition, and follow‑up dates

  • Scheduling & Referral – Appointment booked for review or referral letters issued to specialist clinics or inpatient services
